Statement on the Commission's decision to lift the OLAF Director-General's immunity

I welcome the decision of the College to lift the OLAF Director-General's immunity. It was indeed necessary, and it opens up the only way for the Director-General to clear himself of the allegations made against him. The incidents around the Dalli case are serious ones and need to be investigated. Further irregularities in other OLAF investigations also need to be looked into. In this context, it is rather unfortunate that possible witnesses within OLAF are subordinate to Mr Kessler. The clarification of the facts must not be obstructed. I personally would find it important and appropriate for him to leave the office. The whole affair is without precedent and raises further serious questions. I regret that it took the Commission such a long time, and so much infighting, to come to this decision. It is important that the College remains interested in shedding light on the other incidents around the Dalli case within the Commission. Further developments will demonstrate that the restricted lifting of Mr Kessler's immunity is not sufficient, as other cases of misconduct will come to light.
